Helping Kids Have a Healthy Life Style: Physically Fit

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Crystal BreauxHannah and I are continuing our series on “hot topics” children face in today’s world.  Thus far, we’ve talked about issues they face at school, and even have taken a trip to church with Special Needs Children.  Oh yes, how about the time we took a trip with Hannah’s children church minister as she did a video interview with class members on how they share their faith at school. All of this is in an effort to give parents, grandparents, school officials, church leaders, or any caring adult ideas that will help them become more actively involved in issues that are of concern to our children.

Today, I want to draw your attention to a topic that could be overlooked and that is Helping Kids Have a Healthy Life Style by staying physically fit.  For advice, I went directly to my daughter and Hannah’s mom, Crystal, owner of Your Fitness Designer.  Though she specializes in helping the busy woman find time for exercise, we all know “the tone of the house is set by Mama.”

Crystal lists the following ways in helping your child become more physically fit.

  1. One of my first pieces of advice for your children to become more physically fit is the lost art of PLAYING. It is my belief that kids are spending too much “electronic time,” as we call it in our home.  TV has been viewed as a babysitter and because Ipads and Ipods can be used for learning, much time is spent just sitting.  I have found my kids are in a better mood, get along with each other and become more creative when they are sent outside, just to play.
  2. Aside from playing outside with other kids, our children need to know that we, as a family, see the importance of a healthy lifestyle.  Perhaps the following things our family has done can be adapted into your own family.

As toddlers, a walking/running stroller was a must.  There was nothing I loved more than a long walk or run while talking to my little one and exploring the world.  My goal was to utilize my time for exercise as an opportunity to spend time with them and be a good example of health and fitness.

Now at ages 11 and 7, my husband and I tell the kids to join us for a walk or grab their bike and head outside.  A lot of long talks, family time and calorie burning have been accomplished while we walk or ride bikes.  It is not always at the intensity or duration that we may desire, but it gets the job done.

Another opportunity to stay fit and spend quality time as a family is to train together for a local run, walk, or bike event.  It can be fun to set a goal and accomplish it together.  Check out upcoming events in your area and sign up today.

I encourage you today to take a break from busy schedules, sitting in front of the tube or other electronic devices and go outside.  Play with your kids, go for a walk or bike ride and explore your surroundings.  You may be surprised what you could learn while being active with your kids.  Don’t think of it as exercise.  Think of it as quality time with your kids and as a bonus—you get fit too.

I personally can vouch to the fact that Crystal, not only teaches physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual fitness, she and her family live the life.

I look forward to her returning in the near future with more tips and advice on how to help your child (and family) have a healthy life style.
